MIL 03443, a dunite from asteroid 4 Vesta: Evidence for its classification and cumulate origin
نویسندگان
چکیده
The absence of dunite (>90 vol% olivine) in the howardite, eucrite, and diogenite (HED) meteorite suite, when viewed with respect to spectroscopic and petrologic evidence for olivine on Vesta, is problematic. Herein, we present petrologic, geochemical, and isotopic evidence confirming that Miller Range (MIL) 03443, containing 91 vol% olivine, should be classified with the HED clan rather than with mesosiderites. Similarities in olivine and pyroxene FeO ⁄MnO ratios, mineral compositions, and unusual mineral inclusions between MIL 03443 and the diogenites support their formation on a common parent body. This hypothesis is bolstered by oxygen isotopic and bulk geochemical data. Beyond evidence for its reclassification, we present observations and interpretations that MIL 03443 is probably a crustal cumulate rock like the diogenites, rather than a sample of the Vestan mantle.

AR-AR AGES OF EUCRITES AND THE THERMAl HISTORY OF ASTEROID 4-VESTA
New Ar-Ar ages of several cumulate and unbrecciated eucrites cluster at ~4.48 Gyr. We suggest that this age cluster was produced by interruption of eucrite metamorphism within the Vesta parent asteroid by a giant impact, which excavated and rapidly cooled these meteorites. We see no evidence for younger formation ages of the cumulate eucrites, as previously proposed. Introduction. Several obser...
متن کاملThe Surface of 4 Vesta: a petrologist's view
Introduction: How do HED meteorites constrain the data to be returned from 4 Vesta by the Dawn Discovery Mission? Vesta has long been equated with the " eucrite parent body " in its various iterations and the spectroscopic similarities between Vesta and HED meteorites are compelling. The assumption is made that Vesta is a fully differentiated body. In common with other terrestrial planets, the ...
متن کاملDIOGENITE-LIKE FEATURES IN THE SPITZER IRS (5–35μm) SPECTRUM OF 956 ELISA
We report preliminary results from the Spitzer IRS (Infrared Spectrograph) observations of the V-type asteroid 956 Elisa. Elisa was observed as part of a campaign to measure the 5.2–38 micron spectra of small basaltic asteroids with the Spitzer IRS. Targets include members of the dynamical family of the unique large differentiated asteroid 4 Vesta (“Vestoids”), several outer-mainbelt basaltic a...
متن کاملThe Formation of Jupiter, the Jovian Early Bombardment and the Delivery of Water to the Asteroid Belt: The Case of (4) Vesta
The asteroid (4) Vesta, parent body of the Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite meteorites, is one of the first bodies that formed, mostly from volatile-depleted material, in the Solar System. The Dawn mission recently provided evidence that hydrated material was delivered to Vesta, possibly in a continuous way, over the last 4 Ga, while the study of the eucritic meteorites revealed a few samples that c...
متن کاملGeochemistry of Hed Cumulates: a Synthesis
The magmatic activity on Vesta was certainly dominated by a large-scale melting event, which generated a global magma-ocean. According to this view, eucrites can be explained in terms of fractional crystallization, with subsequent contamination of the melts by liquids derived by partial fusion of the asteroid's crust [e.g, 1-3]. The HED cumulates (cumulate eucrites, dio-genites, and a dunite) p...
